A Belfast father faced a heart-wrenching decision after he identified his own daughter as the suspect in a burglary appeal circulating on social media. The man contacted the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) after viewing CCTV footage of a recent break-in at a local business that had been widely shared on Facebook.
The video, posted by the business owners in an attempt to identify the culprit, clearly showed a young woman forcing entry and taking items. For one local man, the suspect’s movements and appearance were disturbingly familiar.
After wrestling with his conscience, the father made the difficult call to the authorities, confirming the identity of the woman in the footage as his daughter.
A PSNI spokesperson stated, “We can confirm a woman has been arrested in connection with a burglary in the Belfast area. We are grateful for information provided by the public, which is vital in helping our investigations. Enquiries are ongoing.”
The incident highlights the growing role of social media in community policing, while also revealing the painful personal dilemmas that can arise when crime hits close to home.
