A Belfast councillor is expressing his outrage and disappointment after the Department for Infrastructure refused to address safety concerns on the Andersonstown Road, where numerous pedestrians have been injured due to slippery pavements.

Councillor Paul Doherty, who represents the area, launched a petition earlier this year demanding action after a series of incidents, including one involving a woman falling while carrying a baby. Despite gathering over 700 signatures and highlighting the community’s fears, the Infrastructure Minister has rejected calls for safety improvements, citing “laboratory analysis” of the pavement surface.

Councillor Doherty criticized the decision, stating that the concerns of residents and the evidence of multiple injuries have been ignored in favour of lab results with no transparency. He emphasized the real-world impact of the slippery pavements, with pensioners and parents afraid to walk on them due to the risk of injury.

Determined to ensure the safety of his constituents, Councillor Doherty has vowed to continue his fight, urging the Minister to visit the area, speak with those affected, and witness the dangers first-hand. He remains committed to raising the issue at every opportunity until the necessary safety works are implemented.

The Department for Infrastructure has yet to issue a statement on the matter.

Today I delivered a petition with over 700 signatures to the DFI Minister demanding action on hazardous pavements in the Andersonstown area of West Belfast and beyond.

I have proposed two possible solutions to date:

1. Use same approach as Translink at each Glider stop and shave-down pavement leaving rough surface
2. Apply an anti-slip coating to all areas impacted

Too many people have fallen now or avoid these areas all together for fear of injury. We demand a response from the department now!
